The Struggle with Identity

Eyes follow the girl donning a hijab. The boy with the long beard is scrutinized by the clean shaven men. Sounds familiar, huh? At a certain point in our lives, we feel as if we're constantly subject to stares and silent judgement when we step outside with the intent of practicing our religion. We have that nagging insecurity about how we stick out like sore thumbs in a crowd full of fashion forward individuals. That's not the case at all, however. No one spares a second glance at what you're wearing or how you look. We shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable doing the right thing nor should we have the desire to conform to society's standards in order to "belong." Our identities define who we are and outline our morals and beliefs. Religion plays a prominent role in our individuality and therefore taking pride in being a Muslim is important. Of course, in today's rapidly developing world, it's difficult to keep your head held high when you know there are some people that can't grasp what you stand for and despise you solely because of your faith. But as Allah says in the Quran, "Be patient; indeed the best outcome is for the righteous." (11:49) And remember that even when you feel the whole world is against you, Allah will always be there. #MuslimPride
